Global N-CAP has concluded that the Mahindra Scorpio-N offers good protection to the driver’s and passenger’s necks. However, the protection for the driver’s and passengers’ chests is marginal. In the side impact test with a deformable barrier, the Scorpio-N came out with flying colours and scored 16 out of a total of 17 points. The Mahindra Scorpio-N also received an OK rating for the side pole impact test. However, the chest region of the occupants received a “weak” rating.
Global N-CAP mentioned that the footwell and the bodyshell of the all-new Mahindra Scorpio-N are stable and the footwell area is capable of withstanding further loadings.
Mahindra Scorpio-N child safety
For child safety, Mahindra Scorpio-N scored 28.93 points out of 49 in the child occupant protection test. It earned a 3-star rating. This includes 4.93 points out of 12 for the CRS (child restraint system) installed and the maximum score of 24. G NCAP also tested the Scorpio N with dummies mimicking the age 18 months and a 3-year-old. Both were seated facing forward using i-size anchorages and support legs. Both the dummies survived head exposure in a frontal crash. The CRS also offered full protection in a side impact.
New crash test ratings
Global N-CAP was used to test the cars with a single front crash test at a speed of 64 km/h. Under the new regulations, side crash impacts have been added. Also, the rules are now more stringent with the front test, Global NCAP has become stricter in calculating the chest load readings on the crash test dummies.
The side impact tests are now mandatory. However, if the car scores zero stars on the frontal crash test, the Global N-CAP will not be under obligation to perform a side-impact test on the vehicle. Child dummies are now mandatory for side impact tests. The new crash test also takes the pole-side impact into consideration. Pedestrian protection is a must on all the new models and manufacturers need to get validation for UN127 or GTR9 tests.
Global NCAP also requires manufacturers to make the ESC standard across the variants within two years of the test publication. With such stricter rules, the Global NCAP tests are now much closer to the other crash test agencies in terms of crash test requirements.
Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun became the first cars to be tested under the new protocols and both vehicles received a perfect five-star score.
